Public Enemies Movie Rating – 8 out of 10 – Great Movie

One of the rare nights I’ve been able to get out to see a movie recently was last Friday w/ my wife. With only a few hours to entertain ourselves (we had a babysitter), we had the option to see Public Enemies or Bruno. Having not really gotten into Borat, I really wasn’t looking forward to seeing Bruno and convinced my wife to see Public Enemies, starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale.

The movie is basically a re-telling of John Dillinger‘s rise to fame as a bank robber in the Midwestern area of the United States during the 1930′s. Depp, who plays Dillinger, did a wonderful job portraying the infamous character – even to the point where you were almost rooting for him to succeed against the police/FBI. As with most of Depp’s work, he has a certain likeability factor that gets you involved in his characters, regardless of their motives or bad nature.

Overall, I would give Public Enemies an 8/10 rating, Depp an 8/10 rating, and Bale a 9/10. The movie didn’t move too slowly, but it was somewhat predictable so I can’t give it a 9 or 10. The scripts could’ve also used some fine tuning, but overall was good as well.

Ben Stiller Pokes Fun at Joaquin Phoenix at Academy Awards

Ben Stiller poked fun at Joaquin Phoenix at Sunday’s Academy Awards.

Presenting Best Cinematography alongside Natalie Portman, Stiller walked on stage with a bushy beard and sunglasses and chomped on gum.

Playing along with his joke, Portman then said, “This is ridiculous,” and chastised Stiller for chewing gum at the Oscars. Read the full story at USmagazine.com

411LowDown take: This movie includes the guy who plays the director in the Tropic Thunder movie, which was just the #1 movie the past weekend. Steve Coogan is really an actor on the rise, but still looks too goofy to me to really make it any bigger in Hollywood than he is now. Nothing personal – he just doesn’t have any appeal really. The comedy is about a school play that plays off of Hamlet, by William Shakespeare. The antics are crazy and offensive, but sure to be make you laugh – unless you’re a religious nut. Anyway, I’m not going to this one personally, but might pick it up on DVD when it comes out.

411 Review: This movie looks hilarious… the story of a nerdy kid who meets a girl online and then steals his macho brother’s car to go meet her. Of course, the brother is played by James Marsden, who for once (in my opinion), puts together a comical performance. He was ok in that movie w/ Katie Holmes too (forget the name right now), but X-Men was lame – at least Cyclops was. I don’t recognize any other names except for Seth Green, who is pretty good in all of his movies. Sure, he plays the clown/goofball most of the time, but it’s good for some laughs.

Comedian Bernie Mac Dies at 50 from Pneumonia Complications

Comedian Bernie Mac died early Saturday morning at the somewhat-young age of 50. Recently starring in Transformers as a used car salesman and Ocean’s 13 (12, 11 also), Mac will surely be missed.

The comedian has 4 new movies in post-production status, according to IMDB.com, so we’ll be seeing a bit more of Bernie over the next year or so.

“Actor/comedian Bernie Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia in a Chicago-area hospital,” his rep told Usmagazine.com in a statement. “No other details are available at this time. The untimely death comes at a fairly young age for Mac, who has made a name for himself as a stand-up comedian (e.g. Kings of Comedy tour), a TV family man his self-titled “The Bernie Mac Show” and various other acting roles. It was only a few weeks ago, when Bernie Mac was last in the national headlines, after making some not so comforting jokes at an Obama political fundraiser.
