Cast your mind back to when celebrities were enigmas. Before the age of the internet and even television, celebrities were figures of mystique and charm that fascinated people. Once television and film became de rigueur, actors and actresses were elevated to star status. Musicians were celebrated and idolised. In the days before reality TV took over, the term ‘celebrity’ was reserved for anybody in the arts who had become famous for rising to the top of their game.

Now, things are very different indeed. The advent of reality TV has turned the notion of celebrity on its head, and now you can be famous just for being an idiot, an attention-seeker or a human car crash. The real celebrities have been pushed out of our consciousness somewhat; we are still interested in them but it is hard to hear about what they are up to without being flooded with banal ‘celebrity’ news about people we neither know of or care about. It seems now that the people who shout the loudest get the most media coverage, and there are plenty of PR experts out there who can organise for a reality TV non-entity to become headline news, just from one publicity stunt. Here are a couple of programs which have generated the most ‘stars’:

Big Brother

A format which has been repeated in nearly every country across the world, Big Brother puts a bunch of strangers in a house together and films what happens. It’s a pretty basic formula, but is one that has captured the public’s attention. Unfortunately, it has also captured a whole load of wannabes’ attention and they reign supreme these days. The beauty of the original format is that the house was filled with people just like you and me. Now the megalomaniacs have caught onto it, it’s just a bunch of clowns bouncing around to camera, vying for attention.

The Apprentice

The Apprentice is a format whereby ‘celebrities’ (for that read people who once did something vaguely memorable but nobody has heard of them since) try to impress the ‘boss’ by completely a series of business challenges. One by one they are fired, leaving the last one standing with the unenviable position of being the bighead’s latest sidekick. The series promotes selfish business tactics in a poisonous atmosphere, and people are learning that the way to be successful on The Apprentice is basically just to get on everybody’s nerves a little but not quite enough to get fired.

Of course there are the talent-based shows such as ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ that have actually inspired people to learn to dance, so it’s not all bad. But because of programmes like the ones above (and there are many others) we are now awash with people who want the fast-track to fame, who haven’t yet learnt that it’s even faster on the way back down again.

The silver lining to the cloud must be that the real celebrities are probably thrilled about the whole thing – surely if the paparazzi are busy hunting down this season’s reality freak it means that there is more chance of them being left alone!

While we can all appreciate the goatee-wearing, darkly clothed “evil guy” in a James Bond-like action flick, the villains that stick with us are the sly, meticulous and cunning ones that give us chills even on the warmest summer day. Here’s a look at seven of the most insidious villains of all time, forever imprinted in the movie-zone of our brains:

Jack Torrance (Jack Nicholson) – The Shining (1980)

The unforgettable caretaker of The Overlook Hotel starts out as the protagonist of the creepy 1980 adaptation of Stephen King’s novel. As the film progresses, he descends from protagonist to villain. His climax as a villain is the attempted slaughter of his family with an axe. It’s not the barbaric weapon choice or insanity that lands Jack on this list, though; it’s his slow and steady descent into evil, coupled with the unanswered questions of his sanity and the eerie possibility that he had done this before.

Mr. Potter (Lionel Barrymore) – It’s a Wonderful Life (1946)

Mr. Potter is a proper Scrooge in Capra’s holiday classic, as he attempts to ruin the life of the beloved George Bailey. With greed Mr. Potter manipulates George by lying and stealing, which threatens to undo everything in George’s life and leads him to nearly attempt suicide. That level of manipulation without a sign of remorse makes Mr. Potter a truly terrible character, and a powerfully sly villain.

The Truck – Duel (1971)

The shark in Jaws is a memorable villain, but it’s the nameless and faceless truck driver in Spielberg’s earlier film that may be his most insidious villain to date. The movie follows a protagonist’s terrifying drive along a highway as he encounters a truck that seems to have more than a slight case of road rage. The truck attempts to run down the protagonist on many occasions, including one attempt to push him in front of an oncoming train, while maintaining anonymity. The lack of an explanation for the truck’s motivation, and the assumption that the numerous license plates on the truck are those of its previous victims, is especially unnerving.

Chilton taunts Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)

Dr. Hannibal Lector (Anthony Hopkins) – The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

It would be a disservice to not put Hannibal Lector, the incredibly intelligent and calculating psychiatrist who also happens to eat people, on this list. The danger that Hannibal Lector presents in The Silence of the Lambs makes us often forget that Buffalo Bill is the obvious villain of the film. His eerie parting message of “having an old friend for dinner” will resonate with viewers for eternity.

Scar (Jeremy Irons) – The Lion King (1994)

He may be a Disney villain, but Scar is one of the most intelligent, cunning and emotionally manipulative film villains of all time. Along with killing his own brother to get the throne by feigning assistance, Scar convinces the young Simba that he’s to blame for the death of his father. While Simba is attempting to reconcile with this false guilt, Scar takes control of the pride, his brother’s widowed wife and drives the kingdom of Pride Rock to drought and famine.

Kahn (Benedict Cumberbatch) – Star Trek: Into Darkness (2013)

Khan isn’t a new villain, but his revised portrayal in the most recent Stark Trek film secures him a place on this list. Khan is the epitome of an intelligent, manipulative and vengeful villain – a complete package. He lies about his identity, uses words alone to evoke emotional responses from his captors to control them, and breaks promises in order to enact his revenge. Nothing about him is trustworthy, but he manages to make the heroes and the viewers believe him at vulnerable moments, allowing him to seize the power.

John Doe (Kevin Spacey) – Se7en (1995)

The villain of David Fincher’s thriller is only revealed in the last scenes, but his presence throughout the movie lands him at the top of the list. John Doe plays the films’ heroes – wisened cop Morgan Freeman and new detective Brad Pitt – like fiddles, leading them through a series of graphic and thematic murders. Doe gets inside both characters’ heads, forcing them to doubt themselves and each other before revealing himself in an unforgettable fashion that breaks the heroes altogether. Despite catching their guy, the heroes don’t win at the end, and that is what makes John Doe a truly insidious and incredible villain.

Michael Jackson’s family is suing AEG Live for the role they say AEG played in the stars untimely death. The Jacksons have accused AEG of ignoring the warning signs and allowing Dr Conrad Murray to care for Michael, despite the fact that he had a history of addiction problems. Murray was convicted in 2011 of involuntary manslaughter for administering the fatal dose of sedative that killed Michael and is currently still behind bars.

The wrongful death civil trial begins on Monday and is expected to last at least 3 months. The Jackson family state that both Dr Murray and AEG live, the world’s biggest concert promoters had a hand in the death of Michael and have hired top lawyer Brian Panish to represent them. Michael’s mother, Katherine is suing on behalf of the family and states that privately-held AEG, the promoters of Michael’s never-realised “This is It” tour showed extreme negligence when hiring Dr Murray.

Michael embarked on a tour with AEG at a time when he was drowning in debt and desperately seeking to rebuild his reputation as the world’s greatest performer. At 50 years of age it was perhaps at a time in his life when he should have rather been relaxing, taking it easy and enjoying recreational activities such as gaming at BookofRaspiel.de or playing with his 3 kids. Instead he embarked on a 50 date show regime and employed Dr Murray as his personal physician.

Katharine Jackson alleges that Michael’s addiction problems were well known and had been an ongoing issue for years. His drug addiction to Demerol, a powerful painkiller went as far back as 1984 when the star was badly burnt whilst filming a Pepsi commercial. His addiction was widely publicised and Panish, the family lawyer states that AEG Live would have been well aware of news reports. Michael died at home in Los Angeles following an overdose of surgical aesthetic Propofol and a cocktail of other sedatives that was supplied by the now incarcerated Dr Murray. Panish claims a simple background check would have revealed Dr Murray’s financial issues and the fact that he was actually a cardiologist, yet Michael had no heart problems.

The trial is set to be an emotional one and the outcome could once again make history, something Michael Jackson has been good at in both life and death.

Scenes in films which centre on casinos and gambling are often not particularly realistic about the experience itself, which is something which frequently makes them a source of irritation for casino fans – while movie lovers simply judge such scenes on whether they work as entertainment. They are often used to build a sense of tension, such as the one in the 2006 Bond movie Casino Royale, where huge sums of money – and the success of Bond’s mission are at stake at the poker table.

This is one casino movie scene which many experienced poker players have responded to with some derision, not least due to the unrealistically great hands that both Bond and Le Chiffre enjoy during the crucial sequence. However Bond is a fantasy and the scene does succeed as great escapist cinema, with Le Chiffre intending to use his winnings to support terrorism, which adds to the tension of the scene. Bond films have long used casino scenes, for the combination of opulence and excitement they provide, but this one successfully made these scenes effective rather than parodic once again. The popularity of James Bond probably has had a positive effect on casinos around the world overall – just have a look at the amount of Bond themed slots you will find at an online casino.

Cover of Rain Man

Another very popular casino movie scene is the one where Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman hit the blackjack tables in Rain Man. This serves the purpose of illuminating the autistic character played by Hoffman to the audience, as they see both his astonishing ability to count cards and the distress the lights and noise of the casino cause him. The fact that his brother, played by Cruise, is happy to put him in such circumstances in order to exploit this ability for financial gain also shows us his character’s selfishness at this stage of the movie. This is one casino movie scene which even blackjack fans generally enjoy, and which is absolutely crucial to the plot, although it has more to do with exploring character than creating tension and excitement.

From Darth Vader through Dr. Hannibal Lector, we’ve popularized and mythologized a near-army of villains on the big screen…but what about the little screen? Who are the iconic TV villains that have rattled our nerves while keeping us waiting for each new episode?

To explore iconic villains both young and new, let’s look at some of the top villains from the world of TV and film and see which ones dominated which decades.

1930’s: The Wicked Witch of the West. Named #4 movie villain all time by the American Film Institute (just a spot behind Darth Vader – not bad), it’s hard to deny the impact the Wicked Witch of the West had in the first mainstream movie to be displayed in color. Her green skin made the character come to life as much as Margaret Hamilton’s committed performance.

1940’s: Mrs. Danvers. With television not quite taking on the role it would become famous for, it’s easy to forget one of Alfred Hitchcock’s great earlier villains in the 1940 film “Rebecca.”

1950’s: Eddie Haskell. You might not put Eddie Haskell quite in Darth Vader category, but there’s no doubt that he plagued the Beaver during television’s golden years as the wise-cracking archetype of the bad-guy-next door that you love to hate.

1960’s: Colonel Klink. Even though the 1960s also saw the national introduction of Batman villains like the Joker and the Riddler, it’s hard to deny that Colonel Klink’s comedic villain (played by Werner Klemperer) was as an enjoyable a piece of 1960s television that existed thanks to “Hogan’s Heroes.”

1970s: J.R. Ewing. It’s hard to deny that the show “Dallas” ran in both the 1970s and 1980s, but the J.R. Ewing storyline – eventually providing people with the “Who Shot J.R.?” discussion – was one of the most engaging ones on television during the entire 1970s, when comedies like Laverne & Shirley and M*A*S*H* dominated the landscape.

1980s: Colonel Lynch. The second colonel on our list, Colonel Lynch haunted the A-Team throughout the first season, giving a highly episodic action-adventure show a consistent villain. Compared to other popular shows at the time – Cosby, Golden Girls, etc. – Colonel Lynch was an absolute terror.

1990s: Mr. Burns. C. Montgomery Burns, to be exact, and not only one of the most memorable villains of the 1990s but one of the most memorable villains in all of television history. The nuclear power station-owning Mr. Burns was a great foil/boss to Homer Simpson’s lackluster employee dynamic, but also provided the entire town of Springfield – and therefore us as viewers – someone to root against.

2000s: Tony Soprano. Yes, he was the protagonist, but it’s hard to find reasons why Tony Soprano should be considered a villain. As TV in the 2000s took a turn toward the grit allowed on premium channels, HBO’s “The Sopranos” took full advantage and made Tony Soprano a character that you can never forget.

What type of villainy awaits us in the decades to come? No one knows for certain, but the coming ghastly fiends will surely leave us booing for more.

It’s summer time and you know what that means – time to hit the beach! Beachwear is the closest you get to wearing your lingerie in public, and the choices you make say a lot about your personality. Are you playful? Sports? Flirty? Sexy?

Celebrities employ expensive stylists to pick out outfits for the red carpet, but it’s unlikely that the majority of them have a ‘beachwear’ stylist too!

Let’s take a look at some top celebrities beachwear styles and what it says about them. Which celeb swimwear style are you?

Selena Gomez – Girly Girl

Do you just love anything that’s pink? Selena Gomez was recently snapped in a simple-but-sweet pink bandeau bikini that was just so her – adorable, sweet and yet slightly flirty too, more ‘sweet and sassy young woman’ than ‘five year old girl’!

The girly girl loves showing off her feminine side and heads straight for the swimwear aisles where there’s pink, polkadots and bows aplenty. She’s not afraid to have some fun and show off her feminine curves, but she won’t wear anything too revealing either!

Get the look: you could copy Miss Gomez with a hot pink bandeau bikini, or simply follow the same style lines with a cute polkadot tankini or a gorgeous bikini with a frill trim around the hips. Keep accessories simple – a pair of sunnies and some pretty flip-flops are all that’s needed!

Mischa Barton – Retro

Retro styles from the forties, fifties and sixties are experiencing something of a revival in recent years, whether that’s on the beach or on the red carpet. Mischa Barton is a big fan of the look and was recently spotted in a white polkadot bikini top and high waisted black shorts.

Like Mischa, if you love the vintage look you’re all about glamour! Whether you’re a size 6 or a size 16, you know you’ve got a hot body and you’re not afraid to show it off!

Get the look: The vintage look is all about the right balance between covering up and flaunting what you’ve got. Look for high waisted briefs, full-coverage bikini tops or sexy swimsuits, all in retro style prints (polkadots are always a hit and suit everyone!) and with a nipped-in waist for that gorgeous 50′s hourglass shape!

Audrina Patridge - Sporty

Snapped in a figure-hugging bandeau bikini that showed off her toned body to perfection, with a giant beachball under one arm and some simple plastic bangles on the other, Miss Partridge does the ‘girly tomboy’ look to perfection.

If you love the sporty style, it’s likely that your time on the beach is less about sunbathing and more about hitting those waves and having some fun! You love to be active, whether that’s playing a game of volleyball with your friends or attempting handstands in the sea.

Get the look: The sporty look is a simple one. As Chanel knew, less is more so look for minimalistic styles – avoid anything with ruffles, bows or dangly bits! Tie sides are impractical and you’re likely to ‘fall out’ of a string-style bikini when you’re trying to catch that frisbee, so find something well-fitting and supportive. That’s not to say you can’t have fun with the style though – be as adventurous and colourful as you like with your prints!

Adriana Lima – Sexy

Victoria’s Secret model Adriana Lima has the same view on swimwear as she does on lingerie – it has to make you look sexy! With her perfectly toned and tanned body it’s no wonder she opts for figure-flattering swimwear that’s revealing without being tacky.

The sexy swimwear fan goes to the beach to work on her tan – and to show it off! For her, the beach is all about looking gorgeous and trying to catch the eye of that hot guy over there at the volleyball net!

Get the look: Show flesh in a classy way with a sexy black monokini with cut out sides, or a slinky black wet-look bikini. Leopard print is a great choice if you like to wear prints, and don’t be afraid of glitzy decorations such as beading and diamantes. Oh, and don’t forget that sheer kaftan and sky high wedges to go to the bar later in the day!

So, which celebrity swimwear style are you? Tell me below!

When it comes to making money, some of the top celebrities have it down to a science. With millions of dollars in the bank, many of them are experts at spending it too. Some of those celebrities are incredible philanthropists, donating millions of dollars to worthy causes, or in some cases, creating their own foundations to better the lives of others. Other celebrities donate their time to causes, bringing attention to groups or people who might otherwise go unnoticed or be ignored. In doing this, celebrities can use their notoriety, so often seen as a point of frustration to them, to bring something positive to the world. This is usually pro-bono work, meaning the celebrities volunteer their time without pay.

Read on to find out what some of the best causes for celebrities to be involved with are.

PETA

PETA, or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, has become known for its saucy ad campaigns often involving celebrities. With advertising and frequently nude or semi-nude models, PETA has become a part of main stream pop culture, and all for a good cause. It has over 3 million members, making it the largest animal rights group in the world. PETA focuses on four primary areas that it believes to be the biggest causes of animal cruelty and suffering: on factory farms, in the clothing trade, in laboratories, and in the entertainment industry. Celebrity supporters of PETA range from heavy hitters like Paul McCartney and Alec Baldwin to models, singers, and performers.

ONE

ONE, founded by U2’s Bono, is a group that brings awareness and change through advocacy. It has over 3 million members, and campaigns to fight poverty, and disease, particularly in Africa. ONE works with and pressures politicians in order to enact change. ONE is different from other celebrity backed charities in that it puts more emphasis on raising awareness than raising funds. It relies on changes made at a bureaucratic level, and operates by creating enough awareness around an issue that it cannot be ignored.

amFAR

AIDS Awareness (Photo credit: sassy mom)

amFAR derives its name from the merger of two AIDS foundations, creating the american foundation for AIDS Research. The best known celebrity associated with this foundation is Elizabeth Taylor, one of the cofounders of amFAR, along with Dr. Michael Gottlieb and Dr. Mathilde Krim. Taylor went on to also found the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation. amFAR is a non-profit dedicated to supporting AIDS research, HIV prevention, treatment education, and the implementation of necessary AIDS-related public policy. amFAR holds a gala and celebrity auction to garner funds for the foundation.

Make-A-Wish Foundation

The Make-A-Wish foundation is a non-profit charity that helps grant wishes to children with life threatening illnesses. The Make-A-Wish foundation has dozens of celebrity supporters who have donated their time to meet children who wish to meet them. These celebrities often spend the day with these children, whether in the hospital if they are unable to leave, or elsewhere on a trip. Many celebrities have been instrumental in ensuring that children with life-threatening illnesses are able to see their wishes come true, and some go above and beyond by donating money to the foundation, as well as continuing to keep in touch with children that have met them.

The Jolie-Pitt Foundation

As the name suggests, the Jolie-Pitt foundation is a charity created by actors and partners Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt. The Jolie-Pitt foundation donated a million dollars to Doctors Without Borders and Global Action for Children. Doctors Without Borders, or Medecins Sans Frontieres as it is known in much of the world, provides humanitarian and medical need to war-torn regions and developing countries, and Global Action for Children, which is no longer operational, generated awareness, policies, and funding to ensure that children had the resources to develop in a safe and healthy way. Angelina Jolie is well known for her charity work with refugees, as well as her work as a UNHCR goodwill ambassador.

These charities are just a small selection of those that celebrities involve themselves in and endorse. There are hundreds of additional worthy charities, both backed and not backed by celebrities. Take the time to do a little more research, and you’ll definitely find a cause that appeals to you too.

There are many dichotomies in life and the stance we take on these can often be very informative about who we are, and what our values and priorities are in life. Some examples are Apple versus PC, the Beetles versus the Stones, Nintendo versus Sega, tea versus coffee, and Marvel versus DC – but there are many other out there all begging us to choose a side. One of the biggest divisions of all though, and particularly for the red-blooded males among us, is the age old dispute between ales and lagers. Some of us are card carrying members of the ale party, enjoying drinks like Newcastle Brown or London Pride, while others prefer a lighter tasting lager such as Kronenberg or Budweiser. Then there are those of us who didn’t even realise there were different kinds of beer. You know who you are…

But the question that remains is precisely what is the difference between ale and lager? And how do you go about choosing which is right for you? Here we will answer those question.

On the Surface

You can tell a lager from an ale simply by looking at them. A lager will generally be golden in color and will be quite transparent and carbonated. For many in the US this is the most common form of beer and if you’re a fan of a Bud or a Stella then that’s a good template for what they look like. Meanwhile an ale will be darker in color, more of a light brown, and will often be thicker in appearance and more opaque. The froth will often look creamier, and there will be less fizz.

The test is also informative and quite different for the two types. Lager on the one hand is known for being refreshing and is a light and crisp drink. Ale meanwhile is a heavier tasting drink and is often more bitter in flavour with a stronger and longer lasting after taste. Which you prefer will be a completely subjective matter, but it’s probably fair to say that ale is something of a more acquired taste.

Fermentation

This difference comes about as a result of the way these two types of beer are made which cause a range of changes to the taste and color of the drinks. Fermentation is the term for the process in which alcohol is added to wort. Wort is the beer mix pre alcohol and consists of brewed grains and hops (the bitter fruits from vine plants). Once these have been prepared, yeast is then added to the mixture and this will feast on the sugar released from the grain in order to produce alcohol and CO2.

The difference comes from the length of time that a beer is left fermenting. Ales are referred to as ‘top-fermenting’ because they are fermented by the yeast on the top of the beer. This requires just a few weeks at room temperature to occur. However lagers are ‘bottom-fermenting’ meaning that the yeast from the bottom of the drink are the ones producing the alcohol. This takes longer and occurs at lower temperatures – in fact this is where the word lager comes from, translating from the German as ‘to store’.

Complications

There are a few complications however and a couple of awkward beers that don’t fit comfortably into either category. For instance if you would prefer to sit on the fence, then you might like ‘California’ which uses lager ingredients and ale fermentation in order to create something unique. Belgian lambics meanwhile use a process called ‘spontaneous’ fermentation in which they are exposed to yeast that is found naturally in the open air in regions around Southern Belgium.

And if you still can’t make up your mind then there’s only one solution – to try them all. It’s tough work but someone’s got to do it…

When Star Wars: The Old Republic was announced last year, it generated a lot of buzz. It was expected to give a tough competition to the reigning Massively Multiplayer Online game World of Warcraft. So does the game live up to its expectations? The answer is an emphatic YES! The game has a very engaging story line, which was expected of BioWare given its successful story telling history with Mass Effect and Dragon Age series.

The story

The story of The Old Republic is set in a period where Luke Skywalker and Princess Liea weren’t even born. This eliminates Lord Darth Vader’s existence too. The story is basically about how the galaxy is divided because of the war between the Sith empire and the Old Republic. There are eight stories associated with different characters, which you will be told as you move up the class ladder.

Game play

Creating your character is the first thing you need to do for participating in this MMO game. You have two choices – you can either belong to the Old Republic or the Sith empire. Needless to mention, the Sith members are the bad guys and the Old Republics are the good ones. There are four basic classes in both the groups to choose from. Sith Empire’s characters are Warrior, Inquisitor, Imperial Agent and Bounty Hunter, while the Old Republic’s characters are Jedi Knight, Jedi Consular, Jedi Smuggler and Jedi Trooper. Once you pass the first nine levels, you will be able to select the characters from one of the two sub classes in the game.

Once you start making your allegiance, you can build your own crew and then select one of the members to battle the difficult levels. The game has an interesting line of quests. There are unique quests for each character in the game and as you pass these quests you will be able to gain more power. The abilities of your character will also be enhanced as you progress up. That is not all. You will also be able to acquire more powerful weapons.

Graphics and sound effects

The voice acting is fantastic and can be considered one of the strongest points of this MMO game. The music is very apt for the situations, mellowing and raising when needed. The planets appear so life-like that you won’t feel like leaving the Star Wars Universe! Graphics wise, the game has certainly lived up to all its expectations.

The characters, the weapons and the levels are very well designed. The quest line is the best part of this Star Wars game.

So all in all Star Wars: The Old Republic is a neat game which you will surely enjoy playing. When the makers decided not to release it on free-to-play, the fans were disappointed. But buying this game is actually worth every penny. You can add the DVD to the classic section of your collections. One would have never expected such a fitting tribute to the famous film series.
